Medieval fair in Ordizia

Last week Ordizia hosted its annual medieval fair. The town came to life despite the grim weather – the centre was decorated with medieval flags and the streets lined with all manner of artisan stalls. Mythological beasts roamed through Ordizia’s quaint town centre, much to the delight of onlookers:

There were knights atop puppet horses…

and children atop real ones…

A feria would not be a feria in the Basque Country without talos (corn tortillas usually filled with chistorra, Idiazabal cheese or chocolate.)

Weird and wonderful ointments and potions for all sorts of ailments:

IMG_5175Moreish, freshly-caramelised nuts and seeds, not to mention one stand which was selling the best ‘pastel vasco’ I’ve ever tasted. Most of the ones I’ve tried here have been all pastry, no filling and just a bit dull. This one was filled with cream, so buttery and rich – it has forced me to reconsider my dislike of the typical ‘pastel vasco.’
